EFF Launches Encrypt It Already Campaign to Promote End-to-End Encryption

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has introduced the Encrypt It Already campaign, aimed at enhancing the adoption of end-to-end encryption across consumer technology products and services. This initiative evaluates the public security commitments made by major companies and the current state of encryption protections available in widely used services.

EFF categorizes its demands into three areas: Keep your promises, Defaults matter, and Protect our data. The first category addresses features that companies have publicly committed to but have not yet implemented, such as end-to-end encryption for Facebook group messages, interoperable encrypted RCS messaging from Apple and Google, and direct messages on Bluesky.

The second category, Defaults matter, highlights existing encryption protections that require user action to activate. Examples include Telegram’s encrypted direct messages, WhatsApp backups, and encryption for Ring camera footage, which necessitate users to adjust their settings to ensure protection.

Lastly, Protect our data focuses on new encryption features that companies should implement based on existing capabilities in similar products. This includes encrypted backups for Google Authenticator, encrypted Android backup data, and app-level controls from Apple and Google that would allow users to restrict AI systems from accessing secure chat applications.

Through Encrypt It Already, EFF calls on tech companies to complete their announced encryption plans, enable protections by default, and extend encrypted storage to a broader range of user data. Users are encouraged to activate available encryption features and inquire with service providers about the timelines for deployment and coverage.
